The Mondo Bag that started it all

I have a friend who collects bags. Not purses, but bags. Interesting bags from interesting fabrics from interesting places. When she had a big birthday recently, the perfect present seemed obvious. I should make her a bag … but what kind of bag? The fabric had to be South African of course. Beyond that, what shape? What style? So of course I asked the internet. While poking around the interwebs, I discovered the “mondo bag” concept and found this tutorial. Then I went for it! Here’s the mondo bag that started a whole family of mondo bags.

I was so delighted with this first one that I sort of just kept going. I also started experimenting with stripes rather than checks. It saves on some cutting time and still gives a delightful sweeping motion.

And then came the “mini-mondos” …
