This tiny little crib blanket took me months to finish! But that sometimes happens with improvisational crochet or quilting. When you work from a pattern or plan, you might get too busy to work quickly, but at least the ideas never get stuck. When improvising however, even if you have plenty of time, you can’t guarantee the ideas will flow. I had all the time in the world once lockdown hit, but it was still a struggle.
I started in January with yarn left-over from the previous summer’s projects, and I was drawn back to the hexagonal patches that I had done a few years ago. So, I started making hexagons. Then I got low on yarn … but I tried to keep the project to what I had. Once I started putting the hexagons together, I kept thinking of the asymmetry of bougainvillea flowers and knew I didn’t want a regular square or rectangular blanket, but I just couldn’t settle on a pattern. It took me from January to May to finally make the different decisions and finally finish!
