A friend from church had a baby a few months before COVID hit. Then lockdown happened and I had lots of time to make a baby blanket. I couldn’t go out and buy fabric, so I texted her some color palette options from my stash and she chose this blue and gold shweshwe set. I then started playing around with designs. Since I’ve been on a half-square triangle (HST) kick, I went ahead and made stacks of squares and started playing with combinations on my design wall.
(YES! I now have a design wall! I got fed up with leaning over the guest bed and finally taped a large piece of felt fabric to the empty wall. It’s crude and the tape keeps threatening to peel off, but I LOVE it.)

There was a lot of square shifting … but once I finally settled on an arrangement, I stitched the front together and tried to figure out how to quilt it. I wanted to try my new ruler but was nervous because it was another new technique. In the end, I alternated squiggles with straight lines, and and just went for it. Not perfect, but a solid first effort.
