Leafy Lamp

I really love functional art – beautiful objects you can use on a daily basis.

In my pottery classes, I have until now only attempted mugs, bowls and tiles. I knew I wanted to try a lamp though. I told my instructor that and she encouraged me to try hand-building one (rather than throwing one on the wheel). So I did. As is usual for me, I didn’t start with a plan. I improvised … and this leaf shape emerged. I also neglected to take pictures of the process, so all you get to see is the final product. Whoops!

Once it was fired, I took it to a store in Savannah that does custom lampshades. I picked out the shade and finial I wanted, and the owner said he could fit it with the hardware. I left it with him and voila! A lamp. The part I love most actually is the little piece of mahogany he carved to fit at the top of the ceramic base and brace the rod and supports the lightbulb.

I use it every day.
